Lawn Management: Tips for a Lush and Vibrant Lawn

1. Regular Mowing:

  •  Frequent mowing promotes lush, green growth.

  • Trim the grass to an appropriate height, avoiding excessive cutting. Ideally keep grass about 50mm tall as longer grass suppresses weeds

  •  Nip out weeds like dandelions to prevent them from competing with the grass.

2. Watering:

  • Water deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Even in dry weather don’t water too often as this encourages roots to dig deeper for moisture. In summer every two or three days is ideal.

3. Weed Control:

  • Maintain healthy grass to prevent weed growth.

  • Use minimal weed killers and time applications effectively. Read the instructions carefully so don’t over concentrate. A good weed and feed mix every three months or so is plenty

4. Disease Management:

  • Monitor your lawn for signs of disease and unwanted growth such as moss growing in shaded spots. Treat moss with proprietary product or better still a solution of ordinary dish washing liquid applied liberally. After the moss has died back, rake out and reseed.

  • Dog urine patches. Female dogs cause significant damage to lawns. If you are unable to train your pet to use a single spot for micturition then treat patches with an application of oxalic acid or an acid based product as these patches are very alkaline (above pH8). After a few days rake out with hand fork and reseed.

5. Pest Control:

  • Address pests that can harm your lawn. Grass grub is quite common and there are many ways to treat this. One is to set a trap to catch the hatched moths such as a trough of honeyed water under a window that they fall into when attracted to the light, otherwise apply a specific product and water in well. Early spring or autumn is best time for application.

  • Implement effective pest control measures. Good lawn care helps prevent pests but watch for yellowing or dried patches and check with your garden supplier the best product available.
